The TECHSPEC Mercury TL Liquid Lens telecentric lenses from Edmund Optics combine the advantages of a telecentric lens with the flexibility of a liquid lens.
(7.9s) The telecentric design eliminates parallax error, while the integrated liquid lens allows for quick working distance adjustment. Liquid lenses are small cells containing optical-grade liquid that change shape when a current or voltage is applied. This causes the focal length and working distance of the liquid lens to shift.
(1.4s) By eliminating parallax error, a telecentric lens will always have a constant field of view at any distance away from the lens. This is ideal for measurement-engaging applications.
However, conventional telecentric lenses have a fixed working distance and cannot compensate for objects at different distances. In order to inspect objects with depth, the object needs to be repositioned to be in focus, or a different telecentric lens with a different working distance would need to be used. This will add time, slow down measurements, and limit throughput.
(1.6s) On the other hand, liquid lens telecentrics overcome speed limitations by quickly refocusing to different object distances in milliseconds. A liquid lens telecentric lens can be utilized in the inspection of circuit boards to check for pin alignment and defects. By simply changing the current, the lens can quickly adjust working distance and refocus on the different pins. Therefore, object space telecentricity is maintained across the entire working distance range, and the pin heights do not change with the distance away from the lens.
